Toxophilus : Written in 1545 and presented to King Henry VIII by its author Roger Ascham, an academic who would normally have written in Latin, but chose English to demonstrate how good English should be written. He presents a dialogue between Toxophilus, the lover of archery, and Philologus, the lover of learning, on the merits of archery for scholars; and then proceeds to instruct Philologus on the requirements of the activity. His instructions are still referred to today as the basis of good shooting.
