| This 18ct yellow and white gold Badge and Chain has been designed and made by the London goldsmith Grant Macdonald and reflects some of the major influences in his life.
The theme of the design is the heraldic and symbolic rose of England, and in particular the white rose of Yorkshire, the county of David's birth. At the centre of the badge are Alderman and Sheriff Wootton's Armorial Bearings, which were designed by William Hunt, Windsor Herald. On the shield the background of red and blue is from his native City of Bradford, both the City itself and his school there. The white roses allude to his Yorkshire origins; the cross or saltire comes from the Arms of a branch, also Yorkshire people, of the family of his wife Liz. The downward pointing arrows are taken from the Arms of the Worshipful Company of Fletchers, David's mother livery company. The cockerel of Jesus College Cambridge, taken from the name of its founder in 1496, John Alcock, Bishop of Ely, in the Crest holds beneath its wing an oar, in testament to David's love of rowing there. The motto "TOUJOURS LA SOLUTION", translated as "there is always a solution", spotted once on the wall of the office of a French notary, sums up the attitude and approach which David has found it beneficial to adopt in both his personal life and as a City solicitor. This Coat of Arms in hand painted enamel is mounted on the three dimensional chased white gold rose and on the yellow rose and is surrounded by the radiating shields of the Livery Companies of which David is a member: the Bowyers, Clockmakers, Glaziers and Painters of Glass, Information Technologists and the City of London Solicitors. The main badge is connected to the City Corporation Coat of Arms via the shield of the Fletchers' Company, on which the same downward arrows appear as are incorporated in David's Arms. The gold chains radiate from the City Arms up to the shoulder pieces; these contain the rowing oar colours in enamel of the rowing clubs of which he has been a member: Bradford Grammar School, Jesus College, Leander Club and London Rowing Club. At the top of the shoulder pieces is a gold crown, the crest of Langbourn Ward, of which David is very proud to be the Alderman. |
