Past Master, Harold Waterman

Harold Waterman, master 1983-4

Harold Waterman, FICE, was born in Liverpool on 11 November 1925 as the second of five children. He obtained a first class honours degree from Liverpool University and, having moved to London, in 1952 set up his own firm of consulting engineers (H. L. Waterman & Partners) in Richmond. Waterman served as senior partner of his company for 31 years and was an active consultant until his retirement in 1988. A number of landmark buildings were designed by Waterman in that era, including the headquarters of Rolls Royce in Victoria Street, Westminster and Chelsea Hospital, Cutlers Gardens, Hays Galleria and No. 1 Canada Square, then the UK’s tallest building.

In addition to his professional work, Harold served as Master of the Worshipful Company of Fletchers in 1983–84. He was also a keen golfer, being a former captain of Coombe Hill Golf Club, and a past president of the Estates Golfing Society. He also served as deputy chairman of Redditch Development Corporation in the 1980s. Harold married Beryl (née Pomeroy) in 1949, who died in 2006, and they had a daughter Janis, and a son Greville. Harold Waterman died on 11 October 2008 at the age of 82.
